  • Chest compressions
    • For adolescents, chest compressions should be between 2 and 2.4 inches (5 to 6 cm)
    • For children, chest compressions should be about 2 inches (5 cm)
    • For infants, chest compressions should be about 1.5 inches (4 cm)
    • For children and infants, chest compressions should be at least 1/3 the anteroposterior diameter of the chest
  • Hand and finger placement
    • For adolescents, two hands over the lower half of the breastbone
    • For children, two hands or one hand over the lower half of the breastbone, depending on the size of the child
    • For infants
      • One rescuer: two fingers in the center of the chest just below the nipple line
      • Two (or more ) rescuers: two thumbs encircling the chest just below the nipple line
  • Allowthe chest to recoil after every compression
  • Do not lean on chest between compressions
  • Minimize interruptions to chest compressions
  • Chest compression to breath ratio
    • One rescuer: 30 compressions to 2 breaths (if another rescuer arrives, change to 15:2)
    • Two (or more ) rescuers: 15 compressions to 2 breaths
  • May interrupt for rhythm analysis and shock/cardioversion
  • Interruptions should be no longer than 10 seconds
  • Avoid excessive ventilation
  • Make sure the victim’s back is supported (backboard)
