Choking in Children and Adults
Perform Abdominal Thrusts (Heimlich Maneuver)
- Stand behind the victim; wrap your arms around waist
- Make one hand into a fist, place under rib cage.
- Hold your fist with your other hand
- Press upward quickly
- Repeat until
- 0Choking is relieved or
- Victim becomes unresponsive

Do not perform abdominal thrusts on an unconscious victim
Choking in Children and Adults
If the victim becomes unresponsive:
- Lower her to the ground
- Call for help
- Begin CPR – compressions first
- When you would normally give breaths, open the victim’s mouth and see if you can see an object; if so, remove it. If not, continue CPR.
