Perform Abdominal Thrusts (Heimlich Maneuver)

  • Stand behind the victim; wrap your arms around waist
  • Make one hand into a fist, place under rib cage.
  • Hold your fist with your other hand
  • Press upward quickly
  • Repeat until
  1. 0Choking is relieved or
  2. Victim becomes unresponsive

Do not perform abdominal thrusts on an unconscious victim

Choking in Children and Adults

If the victim becomes unresponsive:

  • Lower her to the ground
  • Call for help
  • Begin CPR – compressions first
  • When you would normally give breaths, open the victim’s mouth and see if you can see an object; if so, remove it.  If not, continue CPR.
