Choking in Infants

  • —If you can see an object in his mouth, remove it
  • —Do not perform a blind finger sweep
  • —Sit with the infant in your lap
  • —Hold the infant facedown, head lower than chest
  • —Rest the infant on your forearm, support his head
  • —Deliver 5 back slaps between his shoulder blades
  • —Turn him over with his back resting on your forearm
  • —Deliver 5 downward chest thrusts over the lower half of the breastbone
  • —Repeat until the object is expelled or victim loses consciousness

Choking in Infants

If the infant becomes unresponsive:

  • —Call for help; use cellphone of one is available
  • —Begin CPR starting with compressions
  • —Before giving rescue breaths, look for an object in the infant’s mouth. If you can remove it, do so.
  • —If you are alone and without a cellphone, perform CPR for 2 minutes before leaving the infant to get help
