CPR and Advanced Airway

For Healthcare Providers:

  • —Ventilation without Advanced Airway:
  1. Mouth to Mouth
  2. Mouth to Mask
  3. Bag-Mask
  • —Advanced Airways:
  1. Laryngeal Mask
  2. Supraglottic Airway
  3. Endotracheal Tube
  • —Until an Advanced Airway is in place, pause compressions to deliver breaths

CPR and Ventilation

Mouth-to-Mouth Breaths

  • —Open the airway with head tilt-chin lift
  • —Pinch the nose closed
  • —Create a seal with your lips around the victim’s mouth
  • —Give breath over 1 second watching for chest to rise
  • —If chest does not rise, reposition and give 2nd second breath
  • —If there is no chest rise after 2 tries, continue chest compressions and
  1. Change rescuers OR
  2. Do compression-only CPR

Infant Mouth-to-Mouth Breaths

  • —For infants, cover the entire mouth and nose with your mouth if possible
  • —If you cannot cover the mouth and nose, use mouth- to-mouth technique
  • —Give one breath over one second
  • —Do not overinflate lungs
